John Lennon is one of the most well known musicians of all time and rose to fame while he was a member of the highly popular band called The Beatles. His untimely death in 1980 at the age of 40 years old created a great sense of sadness amongst his musical fans and political activists alike. Today people still remember and mourn the loss of this highly talented musician and activist.

Lennon was born in Liverpool, England in 1940 and started his very first band when he was only a teenager. During his early childhood, which was very difficult and involved many issues between his parents, he began to fall in love with the music of Elvis and routinely read huge numbers of short stories.

During his years in school John was frequently labeled as a troublemaker and a disruption to his class. His teachers were worried that there was no future for him since he did not seem to excel in his coursework, but he soon began to show that he had both musical and writing talent. He especially enjoyed creating comics and poetry.

During Lennon's late teen years he met Paul McCartney and they eventually formed The Beatles, which is the band that propelled them into fame. Some of the songs that he wrote as a teen even ended up being chart hits and it did not take long for the band to become an international success.

As a member of The Beatles, Lennon often the led the direction of the music and he also wrote many of the songs. As time passed the music became more experimental and took its influences from drug culture, spirituality, and even Indian culture. McCartney later began to lead the band, and in 1969, John decided to leave the band altogether due to growing conflicts with other members.

Lennon's solo career featured music that was very different from that of The Beatles and was highly influenced by politics as well as his wife, artist Yoko Ono. His songs frequently commented about the political climate around the world with a large focus on both American and British politics. He also spoke openly about his thoughts in interviews and was not shy of leading activist movements for human rights and opposing war.

John Lennon was murdered in 1980 outside of his apartment building by Mark David Chapman. His widow, Yoko Ono, continues to create music and art, and his sons, Julian and Sean, are both musicians. Today people who wish to honor his memory can do so at the Strawberry Fields memorial in New York's Central Park.
