When it comes to studying the ways and beliefs of ancient cultures it can be quite interesting to note what they considered to be fact. There are several different cultures in the history of the world that have believed in multiple gods ruling over various aspects of existence. To have a pretty good look at the way this breaks down you should take a bit of interest in Greek mythology.

While there might be a number of different aspects to learn and appreciate regarding this aspect of history, there are a few things that you need to understand in order to fully grasp this belief structure. That is what this article is going to be slated to address, a look at what made this such a unique structure of beliefs and introducing you to a few of the most popular gods of Ancient Greece.

One of the first things that you have to realize about most of Ancient Greece was that they believed not only that these gods existed, but that they were just alive and around for the amusement and purpose of these gods. There might have been an occasional epic or two written to discern the relationship between the gods and humans, but really most Greeks believed that they lived and died at the whim of the gods.

The next thing that you can learn about the culture that created these gods would be that it was fatalistic. This term suggests that everyone was doomed to the mercy of the gods. Some gods might be having a great day and a great year, and therefore you would prosper. But everyone was really just waiting around for the bad spell which brought death along with it.

The mythical creatures and entities were a way to describe some of the events that the thinkers and philosophers of the day could not explain. If they could explain events be referring to higher powers, then it could be much easier for them to rationalize some of the more impressive complexities of the world.

There were handfuls of gods that everyone knew. However, you should get a quick look at some of the most commonly known. The first of these would be Zeus, who was deemed the king of the gods. You had Aphrodite, Goddess of Love. Poseidon, God of the Sea, and there was also Apollo, God of Music.

While there might be a number of different things that played a major role in what would shape Greek mythology, this was a good first look at what makes this such an impressive aspect of history. While there might have been plenty of cultures that believed in multiple gods, or pagan beliefs, none had quite the notoriety as ancient Greece.
