Buying a home gym machine is a big investment. While some cheap home gyms start at as little as $500, a really good one will cost you at least $2500. When you look at gym membership fees, its really not that far fetched to think that 1 years memberships for 2 people can easily cover the cost of a machine - and you will have the convenience and savings that comes with working out at home.

When it comes to buying a machine you will probably notice that there are dozens of machines that all look "the same" to the inexperienced user. There are however several things that you need to look out for. As a rule of thumb, the cheaper the machine the less variety it offers in workouts. Here are 3 important points to consider.

1. Resistance

The type of resistance that the home gym uses is an important thing to consider. Traditionally all machines used weight pates which is heavy, noisy and infamous for causing injuries. Most gyms still have these because they are so robust, but for your own home use you really can opt for something a bit more advanced. Resistance rods is a relatively new concept and uses special rods that provide resistance. There are also machines that use gas cylinders and the main benefit is that these are light weight and much safer to use.

2. Variety

The real purpose of a home gym machine is that it allows you a variety of exercises in a single machine. The different exercises are referred to as workout stations and represents a specific set-up of the machine for a specific type of workout. In general, the more versatile the machine is, the more expensive it will be. Make sure you get one that offers a good variety of workout stations for a whole body workout.

3. Size And Weight

The size and weight of your home gym is a real issue. Because its going to be in your home, you will need to bear in mind that it will take up quite a bit of space. Most machines nowadays have the ability to fold up when not in use to help minimize on the space it takes up. However, in functional mode it might require a lot more space to accommodate the full length of motions. Make sure you have enough room to accommodate all the full range of motions and if you anticipate moving the machine regularly you should consider a light weight model that does not work with weight plates.
