Drug abuse is a social problem which is getting bigger by the day. People are realizing the ill effects of drug abuse and are raising their voices against it. Corporate and organizations are the latest to join the bandwagon against drugs. A drug free workplace ensures high productivity, it ensures government support and also certain credits meant for it. The guidelines for an effective workplace drug testing and a drug free workplace program are discussed below:

Transparent and informative policy: A transparent and effective policy should be formed encompassing all the employees. The policy should be easy to understand and indicate zero tolerance to drugs in the workplace. It should show how a drug free workplace can boost productivity. Employees should be informed in advance about the consequences of workplace drug testing and the disciplinary actions that would be taken. Forewarning is necessary before any drug testing in workplace is implemented.

Education and counseling: Prevention is always better than cure. Employees should be educated about the disastrous effects of drugs on their personal and professional lives through seminars, workshops or a lecture session. An organization can also educate the employees through books, printed materials or through individual counseling. It is important to empathize with the employees and talk to them directly.

Third party: Many a time appointing third parties to implement a drug free workplace program gives a better result. Third party organizations are more specialized and they have experienced and skilled staff to handle the process effectively. Third Party Administrators (TPAs), organizations for social cause, support groups, counseling centers and governmental agencies are some examples of third parties for drug testing in workplace or to have a drug free workplace program.

Participation and involvement of top management: A drug free workplace program cannot succeed without the support of top management and leaders. Active participation of the top management would ensure enthusiasm and motivation in the entire process. The managers should be well-trained along with the supervisors, Human Resource personnel and the Union representatives who would be interacting with the employees. Management should ensure that there is participation from a cross-section of employees and from every department. Workplace drug testing program should not be confined to a single department or a small section of employees.

Inform the appropriate authority during crisis: It is wise to inform the appropriate authorities if the situation is not manageable or employees are no cooperating. If the issue is too complex for you to handle contact the concerned department and civic authorities. This is especially vital in the case of government grants and loans that require zero tolerance policies towards drug abuse in workplace.
