If you have a young child, you are probably already thinking about the bicycle you are eventually going to give them. Since it is going to factor heavily into the child's memories you want to make sure that you pick out the perfect one. There are several things that you need to keep in mind when you are buying childrens bikes.

Parents want to make sure that they purchase a bike that their child is going to use. By the time a parent thinks that their child is old enough for their own bike, the parent should have a pretty good grasp on their personality.

They want to find a bike that is going to mirror the child. Once the bike is purchased, the parent's should also encourage their child to decorate the bike and use it as a means of expressing their uniqueness. Parents need to accept that their child is going to be hard on the bike.

The bike is going to get left out in the rain and snow. It might even be left in the middle of road and get run over by a car. Since the bike is going to be damaged, the parents might want to look for a good quality used child's bike which will not cost as much.

If the parents decide that a new bike is the best way to go, they need to think about whether they should get a pre-assembled bike or one that the parents are going to have to assemble. The advantage of the assembly required bikes is that they are cheaper. The advantage of the ones that are already assembled is that the parent knows it is put together properly and that they are tight.

If your child is going to be riding the bicycle by themselves and is not very experienced you should plan on attaching training wheels. The training wheels will keep your child secure and safe while the become accustomed to the bicycle.

Unless the child has been riding a two wheeler with some regularity, parents should plan on attaching a set of training wheels to their child's new bike. The training wheels will keep the child safe while they accustom their selves to the new bike. The training wheels should stay on the bike until parents have plenty of time to really supervise their child for several rides. The child should not be allowed to ride anywhere but their driveway until they have learned to balance and steer without the steering wheel.

The human skull is no harder than the average watermelon shell and it is nearly impossible to put back together. Since a single fall from a bike can leave a child with permanent brain damage it is important to combine buying childrens bikes with the purchase of a helmet. Make sure the helmet fits snuggle against the child's skull.
