So you want to be a Human Resource consultant. And why not? You've paid your dues in corporate life. You've risen to the top of your profession. It is time for a replacement challenge.
So why not HR consulting? It's glamorous. It affords you the opportunity to demonstrate your vast skills. It provides you the prospect to try and do stimulating work in different industries. You'll finally be listened to, you'll be wanted, and you'll be ready to use your experience in new and exciting ways.
HR consulting is a nice career for the right individual-however the wrong profession for many. If you like predictability, the amenities of company life, a gentle flow of individuals to your office, and a regular paycheck with edges-then keep your day job. But if you're snug with ambiguity, you thrive on change and uncertainty, and juggling multiple projects is what gets you up and doing every morning, then consulting may be for you.
HR consulting is a business and as such, it should be run as one. You need an idea that will sell; you need finances to grow and sustain it; you wish insurance to protect it; and you need confidence, creativity, perseverance and a dose of chutzpa to steer it. Consulting is not for the shy or the faint of heart-after all, as I used to be advised by a wise, experienced consultant: "You come to life each morning unemployed."
Starting and building a consulting business is difficult work. It is not what you are doing in between wanting for a job; it is not one thing you do on the side. HR consulting is a real business whose focus should perpetually be to boost the condition of your client. And it will be an exciting and lucrative way to make a living.
Therefore how do you become a successful consultant? Beyond printing your business cards, developing a brochure and a net website, and putting in place an office in that spare room, here are ten musts for making certain success.
1. Develop proven expertise: Prospective clients wish to figure with the best. They request recommendation and consultation. Before venturing in, make positive you're at the top of your game. Unproven entities or someone touting worn out solutions will be deafened by the silence from their phone.
2. Be completely different: If you appear as if everybody else; sound like everyone else; and offer the identical bag of tricks, why would anyone select you? Create a unique brand. Vanilla is good but everyone loves Cherry Garcia.
3. You're in the selling business: You'll be the best consultant since Drucker, but if nobody has heard of you, you may starve. You've got to market yourself constantly and this is where several HR consultants fail. Get comfortable putting yourself out there every day or assume about another profession.
4. Write and speak typically: Writing and speaking are the simplest ways in which to demonstrate experience, develop repute, establish your brand, and obtain in front of perspective clients.
5. Bring worth to the equation: If you're not bringing something to the table that the client does not have already got, then why do they need you? Clients need your experience, data and counsel.
6. Understand the differences between needs and desires: Clients want a heap of things, but a sensible consultant types through it all and provides them what they need. For example, they may need an employee satisfaction survey, however they very would like to scale back turnover. They will wish a new performance appraisal kind, but they really would like to properly evaluate, develop, and coach their people. Good consultants hear their purchasers, expose them to totally different ideas, guide them through the method, and provide them with solutions that add price to their organization.
7. Develop solid, long-term relationships: Developing a relationship with a shopper is more than getting a quick sale. It's obtaining to really recognize the person, understanding what makes her tick, and identifying his pressures and challenges. Sensible consultants develop trusts and confidences. They forge bonds-partnerships.
8. Recognize who will write a check: The trap in that most consultants get caught is selling to someone who can't write the check. They quickly answer any inquiry, meet the "prospect", write a proposal, and wait. Eventually they realize out that they weren't even talking to a decision maker however merely a go-between. Bear in mind, if you are not talking to somebody who can write a check, you are just practicing.
9. Provide results, not activities: Shoppers buy results, not reports or forms. You are hired to boost the shopper's condition. Consultants typically describe their involvement by the activities they will perform rather than the results they'll achieve. Focus on results and outcomes, not tasks and activities.
10. Invest in yourself. Your data, experience, and experiences are what you've got to offer. Develop them and realize a trusted coach who will offer you perspective, insight, and a dose of reality and an occasional kick in the backside to urge you going. You may typically want it.
HR Consulting is a rewarding career choice. However like the frigid Maine waters, taking the plunge isn't for the timid. Develop your plan, engage a trusted advisor, and dive in head first. Once you get swimming, you may love it.
