Sciatica is a particularly uncomfortable situation. The immense pain in the back and the legs makes it so. Well, there's nothing to worry as there're many remedies to it. But, for that you need to realize the causes of the problem. Knowing the causes would be of great help in dealing with the problem.

One of the most common reasons behind sciatica is a herniated disc. The spinal disc is made of soft gel that forms the nucleus and a hard tire like outer wall. Due to certain factors, the gel protrudes through the outer wall. This gel exerts pressure on the sciatic nerve, which results in inflammation of the sciatic nerve.

An additional well-known cause of sciatica is lumbar stenosis. In this condition, the spinal canal narrows down. Due to this slender canal the spinal nerves get compressed. These compressed nerves can be a portion of the sciatic nerve which leads to sciatica.

Pirformis syndrome is a medical condition that contributes to sciatica. By essence, pirformis is a muscle located in the buttocks. This muscle facilitates the rotation of the hip joint. The sciatic nerve is incredibly close to the pirformis muscle. Because of particular reasons, the pirformis muscle gets tight. Subsequently, it puts higher strain on the sciatic nerve, leading to pain.

Spondylolysthesis is another major cause of sciatica. This condition is characterized by slipping of one vertebra over the adjacent vertebra. When a vertebra slips over the other vertebra, it causes compression of the sciatic nerve and eventually sciatica. When sciatica is caused as a result of spondylolysthesis, it results in sciatic leg pain. The sufferers have to tackle shooting pain in the legs and thighs.

Physical trauma in a few cases may be a cause of sciatica. A few accidents leave the body in a state of great shock. This state is known to trigger some sort of irritation in the sciatic nerve resulting in sciatic pain. In some scenarios folks also suffer from sciatic pain as a result of injuries because of accidents and sports like rugby and football etc.

A rare but feasible cause of sciatica is spinal tumors. In basic words, spinal tumors are abnormal growths in the spinal region. They may or may not be cancerous. When a spinal tumor develops in the lumbar region, it ends up in compression of the sciatic nerve and eventually sciatica.

These are just some of the feasible factors behind sciatica. However, the presence of any of the mentioned conditions may not indicate the presence of sciatica. It is necessary that you go for a proper diagnosis of sciatica before you go in for a particular treatment.
