I have used up many hours over the years trying to produce what I think is a wonderful pond. One of the countless troubles that I come across was selecting what kind of plants to position into it. I have discovered some very useful information on plants which I have decided to put in to a series of articles to be of assistance other people in deciding on|selecting|figuring out} what to grow in thier pond. I hope you enjoy these articles and find them useful.

Water Hawthorn (Aponogenton)
Aponogeton distachyos is an example of certainly one of the very best Deep-water aquatics, it's always a simple plant to grow with leaves which tend to be evergreen and flowers that appear for months on end. These curious flowers borne on spikes which float on the surface, each flower has waxy white petals and black anthers. The fragrance is strong, variously described as 'vanilla and 'Hawthorn-like'. The oblong leaves are sometimes blotched with brown and the eventual spread is about 2 ft. Different to a Water Lily it should prosper in limited shade and moving water, but ensure that it is deep enough for those tubers that they are below the ice in winter.

Pond Lily (Nuphar)
This is a relative from the Water Lily family but it will not be as attractive as it's illustrious cousin. The flowers are small, rather plain and are carried on thick stems above the water. There are, however, a small number of distinct advantages, light as well as shade is not a problem and neither is moving water. For an average sized pond choose 'Nuphar minima' (N. pumila). The yellow flowers are about 1inch across and the under-water foliage is translucent. Regrettably, the kinds on offer can be the giant ones like N. lutea (Brandy Bottle) with its 3 inch bottle formed yellow flowers which smell strongly of alcohol. This is only ideal for a sizable pond or lake.

Water Fringe (Nymphoides)
There is simply one basic species - Nymphoides peltata, commonly generally known as Floating Heart. In the catalogues you may locate it listed as Villarsia bennettii or Limnanthermum nymphoides. The minute Water Lily-like leaves measure about 2 inches across and tend to be crinkly edged and blotched or spotted with brown. The 11/2 inch yellow flower is more like a Buttercup than a Water Lily, and the petal edges are fringed. The blooms are borne in small clusters. This is a useful plant for giving quick surface cover before Water Lilies have become established, however it might get out of hand.

Golden Club (Orontium)
Orontium aquaticum is known as a trouble free and non-invasive plant with only one fussy requrement, it does need lots of soil, so make sure to plant it inside of a deep Water Lily basket. It can grow in shallow water, but it needs a planting depth of not less than 1ft if you would like the leaves to drift on the water surface instead of standing erect out of the water. The foliage is beautiful with blue-green colour above and silvery below. The biggest characteristic of this member of the Arum family is the weird flower head. This stands above the water like a pure white pencil which includes a tip that's coloured gold by a mass of small yellow florets. This is one aquatic plant that I would not hesitate to suggest to anybody.

Author Resource:

In my following few articles I’ll be writing about the various plants that you would possibly think about placing into your pond. You can get eight specifically that I want to mention so I might have to separate them into several small articles. Happy reading to you all. I would certainly also like to take this opportunity to thank the 'gardener london ' company who have given me help and advise during the countless years that I have been gardening.
