You may be the foremost writer of the new age and the most prolific. However, that will not get you far if nobody is reading your work. In order to improve your readership, you need to seize the reader by the lapels and get your article in his face. How can you do that? To find the answer, let's study the magazine display at the supermarket. Several of the best, most highly paid copy writers in America write absolutely nothing but article titles for the fronts of periodicals. Let's look and see how they do it.
1) Expose secrets. Everybody wants to know a secret. You will arouse the interest of your reader if you have information he cannot get anyplace else. This is more intense if some mysterious "they" is operating to keep your information out of the hands of your reader. Compare "Eating Too Much Sugar is Bad For You" and "What the Cereal Industry CEOs Do not Want You to know About Sugar." No one wants to hear that eating a lot of sugar is undesirable for you, but plenty of people today want to know what the fat cats are keeping secret from them.
2) Use numbers. Folks today don't have long attention spans. They'll take a minute to obtain a piece of info but they will not take twenty minutes to acquire much more data. Let them know you will not be taking a lot of their time. Tell them just how many tips, secrets and techniques, strategies, etc. you are going to give them. Think about these titles: "Five Steps to Thicker Hair," "Seven Methods to Pleasure Your Sweetheart," "Three Suggestions To Soothe a Teething Baby." Can you see how they motivate a reader to look further into the content while promising not to take up much of their time?
3) Be dramatic. Do not be afraid to scare folks. The promos for regional news shows do this all of the time and so do the magazines in the check out line. Use this carefully, it's possible to go too far and some of those local news promos do just that. But evaluate these two strategies. First, "Winter's Coming - Never Forget Snow Tires," and second, "Don't Let Your Family Die in a Ditch - Do this Now!" Right after reading through the first instance he'll almost certainly say, "okay" and move on. But the second instance? Yikes! I don't want my loved ones to die in a ditch, I want to read this. You get the notion.
If your content articles are not getting the views you would like, go to the supermarket and learn from the pros. Grab the reader with an exciting title and increase your readership.
